Voice: – Voice means the form of the verb which tells us whether the subject does something or something is done to the subject. There are two types of it.

          1. Active voice           2. Passive voice

 1. Active voice: It means the form of the verb which shows the subject does something.

Example: – He eats the fruits.

Here “he” is a subject and “eat” is a verb and the work of eating is being done by the subject(he).

2. Passive voice: – It means that form of the verb which shows that something is done for the subject.

Example: – The fruits are eaten by him.

Here the work of eating is being done for the subject (the fruits).

  • Some other rules to change from Active Voice to Passive voice:

 1. Verbs having Double objects: Some verbs have double objects:

  (a) Direct (non-living) objects.

  (b) Indirect (living) objects.

Such sentences can be changed into passive in two ways:

(i): Sub (I.O.) + H.V. + V3 +0 (D.O.) + by +0

Example: – (i) Sohail gave me a pen. (Active)

I was given a pen by Sohail. (Passive)

(ii) Shakir Sir teaches me English. (Active)

I am taught English by Shakir Sir. (passive)

(ii): Sub (D.O.) + H. V. + V3+ for/to + O (I.O.) + by +0

Example: – (i) Sohail gave me a pen. (Active)

A pen was given to me by Sohail. (Passive)

(ii) Shakir Sir teaches me English. (Active)

English is taught to me by Shakir Sir. (passive)

2. Sentences having modals: To Convert such sentences into Passive Voice we use ‘be’ after modals and 3rd form of the main verb.

             Subject + modal + be + + by + object

Example: – (i) I can win the match. (Active)

The match can be won by me. (Passive)

(ii) You shall write a letter. (Active)

A letter shall be written by you. (passive)

3. Unimportant Subjects: They are some unimportant subjects that are not used as objects in the passive voice. These are the following: They, people, all the men, all the women, we, someone, somebody, everyone, everybody.

Example: – (i) People speak English all over the world. (Active)

English is spoken all over the world. (Passive)

(ii) They killed a snake. (Active)

                       A snake was killed. (Passive)

                 (iii) People eat rice. (Active)

                       Rice is eaten. (Passive)
